Author - Sarah Villers: (12-03-06) | Selfbuild your way to a great ecohome |
Self builder, Sarah Villers, has recently completed a spacious detached, 3-bed eco-home. It took three weeks to erect the timber panel frame, including the windows and roof membrane, so making it almost weatherproof. It then took a further three months to complete the rest of the project. It was a fast build. Being fast, it reduced labour costs, though work was pretty intensive and was achieved through plenty of goodwill and very positive cooperation...

This is an interesting article. The build costs are encouraging to other would be self builders. However, there is no discussion on the purchase price for the site?

As someone planning a home extension which I want to make as carefullky-built as possible I enjoyed reading this story a lot. It was particularly helpful to follow how Sarah decided what features she could afford, and to see how much they ended up costing. The one thing I would be interested in seeing, if possible, is a picture or two of how the completed house looks in its neighbourhood.

Sarah Villiers' article was both encouraging and illuminating. I am considering a ecobuild on an existing footprint identical to the one described. Several architects I have contacted have assured me that no heating system would be required with the right amount of insulation, and maybe triple glazed windows. A woodburner would be sufficient for the worst of the winter.
I would be interested in hearing from Sarah her broader timescale. How long did the whole process take from the identification and the purchase of the site. I am very encouraged by her report of a three or four month build. What led up to that I wonder?
Also how much extra use, and cost, would the wind turbine have proved to be?
